Few stories translate over to anime better than those that revolve around sports. Sports anime are astounding to watch because they bring team spirit, agility, and motivation to fight the competition no matter what, all into the story.

Sports anime are crafted with the intentions of making the plots and characters interesting and are often backed by professionals and experts in the specific field of sport making the techniques and styles depicted realistic.

Fans are entranced with seeing the anime characters work hard towards their dream and goal, often overcoming their challenges. The characters in sports anime are often likeable and work well together and the matches are highly enthralling leaving fans hyped-up and wanting more.

Sports anime can sometimes be a lot better than actual sport simply because people who likes sports and even those who don’t necessarily like sports can enjoy them. Better yet, it can even motivate fans to start doing sports themselves

1. Initial D

Focusing on the world of illegal Japanese street racing, the series is set in the late 1990s in Japan’s Gunma prefecture, Initial D follows the adventures of Takumi Fujiwara who helps his father run a tofu store by making deliveries every morning to a hotel on Akina with his father’s Toyota Sprinter Trueno GT-APEX (AE86). It is later revealed in the series that Takumi has been driving on Mount Akina for five years before he even had his license and as a result, his driving skills in mountain racing were honed and he is able to drive even under adverse weather conditions.

2. Haikyuu!

Following the journey of Hinata Shoyo who was inspired to begin playing volleyball after seeing the “The Little Giants” play. Hinata sets out to form the school team only to learn that the prodigy Tobio Kageyama who humiliated Hinata’s middle school volleyball team in a crushing defeat – is now his teammate!  Although, the series largely comprised of match-focused episodes, Haikyuu!!’s story does not only revolve around the development of a player’s skill as an athlete but rather it focuses on how volleyball as a sport has changed all the characters individually.

3. Kuroko’s Basketball

Once upon a time, a team of basketball prodigies known as Generation of Miracles rose to fame by demolishing all competitions. All five of these basketball stars then went on to different high schools joining top basketball teams in their new school after junior high school ended. Little did everyone know, there was a 6th player in the Generation of Miracles who went on to Seirin High. Here, Tetsuya Kuroko, sixth star formerly with Generation Miracles teams up with Taiga Kagami, a student who recently returned from America to take on Kuroko’s old teammate one by one.

4. Yuri On Ice

After suffering a crushing defeat at the Gran Prix Finale, Yuuri Katsuki returns to his family home unsure of his future options in skating.  However, Yuri finds himself in the spotlight again when a video of him performing Victor Nikiforov’s most famous routine suddenly went viral. This caught the attention of Victor who decided to fly to Japan to coach Yuri much to the disappointment of Yuri Plisetsky, a rising star from Russia who is determined to win back Victor’s tutelage.

5. Sk8 The Infinity

In Okinawa, a group of hardcore skaters participate in a secret, no-holds-barred competition after midnight known as “S”, racing down a winding road carved out of an abandoned mine. The skaters often form rivalries or “beefs” with each other. Reki, a high-school sophomore and skater is addicted to “S” and invites Langa, a transfer student from Canada with no skateboarding experience to an “S” race. After landing themselves into trouble, Langa is forced to compete in one of “S” dangerous races.
